The process of seed dispersal has a profound effect on vegetation structure and diversity in tropical forests. However, our
understanding of the process and our ability to predict its outcomes at a community scale are limited by the frequently large
number of interactions associated with it. Here, we outline an approach to dealing with this complexity that reduces the number
of unique interactions considered by classifying the participants according to their functional similarity. We derived a classification
of dispersers based on the nature of the dispersal service they provide to plants. We described the quantities of fruit handled,
the quality of handling and the diversity of plants to which the service is provided. We used ten broad disperser traits to
group 26 detailed measures for each disperser. We then applied this approach to vertebrate dispersers in Australia’s tropical
forests. Using this we also develop a classification that may be more generally applicable. For each disperser, data relating
to each trait was obtained either from the field or published literature. First, we identified dispersers whose service outcomes
were so distinct that statistical analysis was not required and assigned them to functional groups. The remaining dispersers
were assigned to functional groups using cluster analysis. The combined processes created 15 functional groups from 65 vertebrate
dispersers in Australian tropical forests. Our approach—grouping dispersers on the basis of the type of dispersal service
provided and the fruit types it is provided to—represents a means of reducing the complexity encountered in tropical seed
dispersal systems and could be effectively applied in community level studies. It also represents a useful tool for exploring
changes in dispersal services when the distribution and abundance of animal populations change due to human impacts.

The forest fragments surrounding the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary (BFMS) in central Ghana shelter small populations of Colobus vellerosus. Little is known about these populations or the ability of the fragments to support them, despite the fact that these fragments represent potentially important habitat for the colobus in this region. We compared the diet of three groups of C. vellerosus in the fragments to two groups in BFMS. We also examined the differences in plant species composition and food abundance among fragments. The study took place from June to November 2003. Dietary data were collected using scan sampling. Plant species composition and food abundance were evaluated using tree plots and large tree surveys. As in BFMS groups, leaves constituted the highest proportion of the diet of fragment groups, yet the colobus in fragments fed on more lianas than did those in BFMS. Over 50% of all species observed eaten by colobus in the fragments were not consumed in BFMS groups during the same season. Food abundance was similar between fragments and BFMS, although species composition differed. There was no relationship between the density of colobus and the density of food trees or percentage of food species, suggesting that other factors may be influencing the number of colobus present. This study highlights the broad dietary range of C. vellerosus, which may be a factor allowing its survival in these fragments. 相似文献

Edge effects in a tropical montane forest mosaic: experimental tests of post-dispersal acorn removal
Forest edges created by scattered-patch clear-cutting have become common in tropical montane cloud forests in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. It was hypothesised that forest edges may influence regeneration of oak species, which are canopy dominants in these forests, by affecting the activities of small mammal species. Acorns of different oak species varying in germination timing were offered to predators and/or dispersers at different positions along replicated forest edges during 2 consecutive years. We investigated the effects of (1) edge type (hard and soft), (2) distance from the edge (0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 m inside forest fragments) and (3) oak species, on the rate of acorn removal mainly by small mammals. During a non-masting year, acorn removal was affected by the interaction of edge type and distance from the edge (P<0.05), with acorn removal being highest near hard edges compared to adjacent forest interiors. As predicted, acorn removal was greater along soft (100%) than along hard edges (82%), but this pattern was recorded only during the non-masting year. This study partly supports previous studies of rodents preferentially consuming acorns with early germination rather than acorns exhibiting dormancy, however these patterns may change with variation in acorn abundance. These results suggest that patch clear-cutting affects regeneration processes within forest fragments by influencing the activities of small mammals, but the nature of this effect also depends on acorn abundance and the characteristics of the forest edge created. 相似文献

Concomitant with the rapid loss of tropical mature forests, the relative abundance of secondary forests is increasing steadily
and the latter are therefore of growing interest for conservation. We analysed species richness of fruit-feeding nymphalid
butterflies in secondary forest fragments of different age and isolation and in mature forest at the eastern margin of the
Lore Lindu National Park in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. From April to August 2001 we collected 2322 individuals of fruit-feeding
butterflies, belonging to 33 species. Butterfly species richness increased with succession, but was significantly higher in
mature forests than in all types of secondary forest. Isolation of the forest fragments did not have a significant effect
on butterfly species richness in the range of distances (up to 1700 m) studied. Rather it appeared to affect only a few species.
Species richness of endemic species was higher than of non-endemic species. Although endemic species were most diverse in
mature forests, many species captured were restricted to secondary forests. Our results show that mature forest is essential
for the conservation of nymphalid butterflies and for the endemic species in this area. However, considering the relatively
large number of species found in these rather small habitat islands, secondary forest fragments, especially older successional
stages, can be taken into account in conservation efforts and thus contribute to the preservation of tropical biodiversity

We monitored populations of two wood ant species, Formica aquilonia and Formica lugubris, through annual mapping of the colonies in a fragmenting forest landscape from 1966 to 1998. The genetic population structure was studied at the end of the study period by using 12 microsatellite loci. Fragmentation of forest led to a decline and spatial redistribution of populations. Changes in the spatial distribution were particularly pronounced in the highly polygynous (many queens in a single nest) species F. aquilonia, whose local populations declined or became extinct, or relocated themselves and colonized new patches. The genetic relationships of the remaining subpopulations indicated the historical developments, revealing the boundaries of the historical populations (high values of genetic differentiation, F(ST)), recolonization histories (genetic affinities revealed by Bayesian analyses) and population decline (reduced variation). Big genetic differences could be detected over short distances, so differentiation also depended on social factors. Our results showed that a genetic study can be reliably used to dissect the recent historical changes underlying the present population structure, and that species with different social structures can respond differently to habitat changes. Combining our demographic and genetic results suggests that habitat fragmentation forms a clear threat on a local scale with large negative effects on ant population viability. 相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dalbergia nigra, known as Brazilian rosewood, is an endangered tree species restricted to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and has been intensively logged for five centuries due to its high-quality wood. The objective of the present study was to assess the genetic variation and structure in adults and saplings of the species from a large reserve of the Atlantic Forest, the Rio Doce State Park, and from two small surrounding fragments, one better preserved and another with a high degree of anthropogenic disturbance. METHODS: Analyses of genetic variation and structure were conducted by studying allozyme markers. Seven putative enzymatic loci were resolved, five of them being polymorphic. KEY RESULTS: The mean numbers of alleles per locus (A) were 1.93 and 1.73, while the percentages of polymorphic loci (P) were 93 and 73 % for adults and saplings, respectively. Saplings from the fragment with high anthropogenic disturbance exhibited the lowest values of A and P. The fragment that constitutes a conservation area exhibited genetic variation similar to the population from the large reserve. The observed (H(o)) and expected (H(e)) heterozygosities were not significantly different among the three populations. Only sapling populations showed F(ST) values (divergence among populations) significantly different from zero over all studied loci. The fragment with high anthropogenic disturbance exhibited considerable genetic divergence in relation to the above-cited populations. CONCLUSIONS: The evaluated populations displayed mean levels of genetic variation intermediate to those expected for narrow and widespread species. The results suggest that fragments with similar area and geographical distance from a large protected reserve can exhibit different levels of genetic variation, depending on the degree of anthropogenic disturbance. The considerable genetic variation in the protected fragment points to the importance of adequate conservation of small fragments for the preservation of genetic variation in D. nigra. 相似文献

Genetic diversity in fragmented populations of Berchemiella wilsonii var. pubipetiolata (Rhamnaceae) 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
BACKGROUD AND AIMS: Berchemiella wilsonii var. pubipetiolata (Rhamnaceae) is distributed in fragmented habitat patches in eastern China. It is highly endangered because of severe disturbance by anthropogenic activities. Information on genetic variation and structure is critical for developing successful conservation strategies for this species. METHODS: Allozyme variation of population genetic diversity and structure was investigated for a total of 98 individuals sampled from four extant populations using isoelectric focusing in thin-layer polyacrylamide slab gels. KEY RESULTS: Based on 20 loci scored from the nine enzymes examined, a high genetic diversity was detected at both the species and population level, while there was a loss of low frequency alleles (<0.1) in all populations. Most loci showed deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium due to excess of heterozygotes in all populations, suggesting that selection for heterozygotes has occurred in this species. The genetic diversity was mainly found within populations with a moderate genetic differentiation (F(ST) = 0.13), but the two geographically discontinuous population groups showed significant differences, with F-statistic values of 0.078 for the Zhejiang populations and 0.014 for the Anhui populations, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: It appears most likely that this species has experienced a recent decrease in population size, and genetic drift in small populations has resulted in a loss of alleles occurring at low frequency. The differentiation into two population groups reflects a population genetic consequence that has been influenced by the different land-use in the two regions. Some conservation concerns are discussed together with possible strategies for implementing in situ and ex situ conservation. 相似文献

The preimplantation embryo starts as a single cell, the zygote. The first cell divisions do not lead to volume expansion, but rather to an increasing number of small cells. At the morula stage the first two cell lineages differentiate into the trophoblast and the inner cells mass/embryoblast. During development of the preimplantation embryo, apoptosis occurs only after the onset of the embryonic genome. It has become clear that the development of a healthy child requires not only very high rates of proliferation and differentiation, but also apoptosis, which is a crucial mechanism for morphogenesis and the development of the inner organs. Furthermore, the generation of specific cell types, such as lens cells, erythrocytes, and thrombocytes, depends on the apoptosis pathways. This is also true later in gestation, when the trophoblasts form the placenta and provide the epithelial cover of the villous trees of the placenta. This layer is in direct contact with maternal blood and, as do all epithelia, displays a continuous turnover of cells. Thus, apoptosis is a normal constituent of survival in this layer as well, and changes in the regulation and rate of apoptosis have deleterious effects on the trophoblast and consequently the developing embryo or fetus. Here we present a very brief overview of the importance of apoptosis for the development of the preimplantation embryo and the maintenance of placental trophoblasts. Furthermore, we highlight what happens when regulation of proliferation or apoptosis fails in these systems, and attempt to show that apoptosis is only the consequence of poor embryo or trophoblast development -- not its cause. 相似文献

Mountain hares (Lepus timidus) show high site fidelity even though they are non-territorial and sometimes make long excursions to new areas outside their home range. This study investigates how far apart consecutive annual and seasonal home ranges of the same individual are situated, how much they overlap and if habitat preference can explain the observed high site fidelity. The results show that hares usually overlap their previous home range, both between seasons and years, although the seasonal overlap is smaller, indicating that hares show a more pronounced change of areas between seasons than between years. The seasonal habitat selection was very distinct, tracking changing resource availability between seasons, while the annual selection was difficult to interpret as it mixed the seasonal patterns. Consequently, the annual selection seems to be merely an artefact from the more important seasonal selection. I therefore caution that results from habitat selection studies based on annual home ranges that are estimated from animals in seasonally differing environments should be treated with care. It appears that while seasonal home ranges are selected on the basis of resource availability, there is sufficient variation in the strength of this response to suggest that a mountain hares local knowledge of an area could also explain fidelity to their annual home ranges. 相似文献

Realization of programmed cell death in senescence represents an activation/inactivation of the respective gene. Enzymatic methylation of nuclear DNA with the creation of 5methylcytosine is one of the mechanisms, which can regulate gene activity in animal and plant cells. 5Azacytidine (5azaC) acts as an inhibitor of DNA methylation, and induces expression of a range of some genes including genes responsible for senescence. Fragmentation of nuclear DNA is one of the hallmarks of programmed cell death in apoptosis pathway in plant cells. The influence of 5azaC (100 microg/ml) on nuclear DNS amount and its fragmentation in the first leaf cells of barley was studied. It was shown that in the first leaf cells of barley seedlings there is an apoptosis pathway of programmed cell death. It was also observed that nuclear DNA fragmentation under the 5azaC influence is strongly inhibited, and the DNA amount in the first leaf increases. Synthesis and destruction of chlorophyll also play a significant role in programmed cell death in plants. It was shown that under the 5azaC influence, the absorption spectrum of a pigment does not change in leaves and coleoptiles in the light, whereas in the dark condition, these pigments are not created under the 5azaC influence. 相似文献
